The First Retreat Sa Kabukiran

Sa Kabukiran has not been formally opened as a place open to the public. However, since November 2013 it has informally opened its doors and has welcomed people who were interested to hold family gatherings, recollections and simple get together with friends. The people who came here were friends of mine and some people who were associated with them. The comment I always hear from these groups was that the place somehow takes the stress out of them. I am not at all surprised to hear that.

Over the years, even when I started Sa Kabukiran in 2010, this place has always removed the stress I had from work and from day to day living. The weekly visits I made to this place gave me such a breathing spell and created for me a peaceful refuge from the stressful corporate life I had back then. Even now, after almost four years, this place gives me such peace and serenity. I thought that it was only me who had these moments of quiet and peaceful serenity. As I heard the comments of other people who came here about the place, it just confirmed what I've known all along – that this place has such a positive energy and that it is capable of absorbing the heavy and negative energies one has. It has been said that plants and trees absorb negative energies. Science tells us that the oxygen that plants give out refreshes our senses. Maybe, this is what causes the positive energies. But more than that, I think that the place is kind to those who are seeking to have some peace in their heart and to those who have lost their connection with nature and somehow are searching to reconnect themselves back to it. The place has the capacity to provide the tired and weary traveler with renewed energy which  he may need for the long journey ahead.

I suppose, Sa Kabukiran has made itself known to the people who have visited it as one who is indeed like Mother Nature, who allows her children to rest peacefully on its nurturing arms. I guess, these words that I write come from one who has been Sa Kabukiran so many times. Perhaps, it is best for people to come and experience the place to understand what I mean.

It is the place’s capacity to rejuvenate and re-invigorate people that I have decided to organize the first Lenten Retreat Sa Kabukiran. The theme of the retreat is “My God my God, why have you forsaken me.”  Christians know that these words were uttered by Jesus on the cross as he was dying. However, these words were actually originally written in Psalm 22. The retreat was conducted in March 16, Sunday. There will be another batch in March 30. We just finished the March 16 retreat. I could tell from the faces of the participants as we ended our retreat that they have found new energies and new directions in their lives once more. Thanks to the word of God that gives light to our feet that allows us to  know our way back home once again. But I know that encountering the word of God in this place has indeed become a double blessing to the participants. They have not only received the word. They have also received the nurturing presence of the Spirit who is indeed present in God’s creation here Sa Kabukiran. I know this place will be a place where people will not only receive light in their hearts and minds. It will also be a place where their spirits can be renewed and strengthened. Indeed, they will have the strength of eagles’ wings! Thanks to the Spirit who hovers over God’s creation and blesses all those who encounter him  so that the face of the earth can be renewed.  I hope that Sa Kabukiran will be a refuge to all those who have found life simply exhausting and wearisome.

I hope that this place will be a place where they can be in touch with their soul and with their creator. In the bible, especially in the first five books of the Bible or the Pentateuch, God deliberately created cities of refuge. These are places where people who have violated the law and have by any chance made some serious mistakes in their lives, could run to and seek refuge. There, they will not be haunted by anyone wanting to bring them to justice. In these cities, they will not be disturbed by anyone who might seek revenge to redress a wrongdoing committed by the one seeking refuge. Sa Kabukiran is something of a City of Refuge. In this place, people who are tired and weary can seek refuge from all the anxieties and the troubles of life. It is a place where one could find the nurturing presence of creation, ready to keep anyone who comes to it safe and free from all the burdens that the world has to offer.
