A Visitor's photo journal of Sa Kabukiran

Sept. 10, 2017

Yesterday, Agnes, our visitor who posted that magnificent sunrise picture at Sa Kabukiran sent me two other attachments. She made a collage of some of the pictures she took and put into words some of her feelings about the place. I thank her for taking time putting together these beautiful pictures of Sa Kabukiran and expressing how she felt about the place. Thanks Agnes. I was simply overwhelmed how Sa Kabukiran made such an impact on you.
She documented her stay with these photos and word collage she put together. I am happy that people feel this way when they visit this peaceful farm.
Wow, she even made something like a brochure for Sa Kabukiran!

Sunrise at Sa Kabukiran

It was Sept. 1, 2017 when Sa Kabukiran had a lone guest from Manila. She was Agnes Marcelo, a masteral student in theology at Don Bosco Center of Studies ( DBCS)  in Paranaque, Metro Manila. She came to see Sa Kabukiran to experience first hand the peace and quiet that only nature can give.  Actually, Agnes was a student of Sir Lapid  who once taught at DBCS at its Master in Religious Studies program. As soon as she arrived, she went around taking pictures of Sa Kabukiran's environment.  She stayed for the night and woke up early to be able to catch a glimpse of the break of day. As soon as the sun rose, she took a photograph of it and described the experience in poetic language. We post her sunrise picture here together with poetic description of that wonderful sunrise in Sa Kabukiran.

A picture Agnes took early morning. With it is her poetic description of her unique experience.

Mary the Queen College ( MQC) Season of Retreats for its Graduating Students

July 2017

Beginning the month of July, MQC ( Mary the Queen College) organizes a series of retreats for its graduating students. All graduating students make an over night retreat before they graduate. This is done beginning the month of July up to the month of August. The retreats are done this early because the end of the school year sometimes sees these graduating students busy with their theses and other requirements for graduation. Making these retreats also at the start of the school year allows them to have a better perspective of their student life as they begin the school year.  For this year, there are about 10 batches of students making their retreats. Each batch consists of two sections at a time. They spend an over night here at Sa Kabukiran.

It is only once in their four years in college that these students get the chance to have a retreat. For some, it is their first time to experience what a retreat is. For those who came from private schools, retreats are common especially for graduating students.

The retreats at MQC are organized and conducted by the school's theology department and campus ministry.  As far as I am concerned, they are not your usual kind of retreats where students hear one talk after another. They are more interactive and reflective such that at the end, students come to a beautiful realization of their life and the value that family plays in their growth as young adults.

MQC student retreat done at the Lolita Lapid Hall, Sa Kabukiran

MQC students are exposed to 8 semesters of theology instead of the usual 3 or 4 semesters of theology that many catholic schools have for their college students. The theology subjects are really geared more on the formation of faith and life. This is perhaps the reason why theology at MQC remains to be one of the most appreciated subjects among the students. The methodology of their theology classes are just tailor fitted to young people who feel the need to be guided and directed especially by the knowledge of their faith.  We continue to pray for the success of these retreats at Sa Kabukiran. God bless!

Team Delta Visits Sa Kabukiran

 July 28, 2017

They came as a group of engineers and architects from a company known as Team Delta. Team Delta is the Construction and Development Company of Dennis Pineda who is also known as Delta.  These are the very same people involved in the construction and development of Pradera in Lubao, Royce Casino and Hotel in Clark among others. And they came not for an updating seminar on engineering or construction matters, but for a recollection.

Engineer Ronald who is the head of Team Delta has asked Sa Kabukiran to prepare a recollection for this group. He said that his team has been through a lot of stress and hard work. He said that his team needed to have some break and needed to rest so they could get back to the ground again, renewed, rejuvenated and working hard as before.

Engr. Ronald was one of the first visitors of Sa Kabukiran about 6 years ago. At that time, he saw Sa Kabukiran practically all bare with only seedlings planted on the ground. Now after 6 years, those seedlings have grown into big trees. When he came back to see his team, he saw how much transformation Sa Kabukiran has undergone, with the trees now so tall.

Here on the photo are 21 participants of the Team Delta recollections. Posing at the Lolita Lapid Hall where they had their recollection.

Taking time out to relax and reflect gives people a better perspectives of why they do things. These 21 good men and women took that time to get a sense of why they are doing things and for what purpose. Sa Kabukiran gives them that chance to relax and reflect, given the natural and serene ambience.

A the day came to an end, Engr. Ronald and his team informed Sa Kabukiran that they would love to do another recollection sometime in December. I guess, the thought of simply taking some time out and relaxing and reflecting was a welcome break to all. See you soon Team Delta. Sa Kabukiran wishes you all the best in your work, in your family and loved ones and in your dedicated time at Team Delta Construction Company. God bless.

Graduate Students of Religious Education at Holy Angel University visit Sa Kabukiran

This summer, I had the chance to teach at the graduate school of religious education at the Holy Angel University, Angeles City. My subject: The Old Testament. It was my first time to teach at Holy Angel. I had thirteen graduate students. Unfortunately, four of them dropped out after the first meeting due to some other commitments.  So in the end, I was left with nine students. Of these, six were ex-seminarians mostly from the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary. One came from San Carlos Seminary in Manila. I assumed that these ex seminarians have mastered the Old testament. Surprisingly, much of what we studied was really new to them. This presented to me an opportunity for these students to learn more about the Old Testament and for them to learn to love the Old Testament. On the last day of classes, in May 27, 2017, we held our class at Sa Kabukiran.
The class was a dynamite. The energy, the enthusiasm, the receptivity was simply startling. But more than that, they had a great sense of humor. Somehow the humor covered all the deep soul searching these group had. Many of these students were young – some straight from college. For them to be dreaming of a career in religious education is more of a call rather than a competitive career. I am not surprised why the topic on prophets resonated well with the group. These are the future prophets who will speak of God and guide hundreds of students into the way of peace. While the experience of teaching was both exciting and fulfilling, it was the aspect of soul searching that these students had that touched me most. These young people have their ideals. But more than the ideals, I think they have been genuinely touched by God to respond to a call to be his witnesses to guide people towards the path to life. At a certain point, a number of them struggle with their own humanity, their faults, their own weaknesses. Some grapple with the reality of their humanity while at the same time dealing with the lofty reality of speaking in God’s name. I too at one point in my life struggled like these students. There is indeed an uneasiness that overshadows one who speaks about God. Even the prophets had the same struggle. I shared with my students my own struggles similar to what they were going through. But in the end, I said, the God who calls is also the God who enables.
I think, the end of our study of the Old Testament gave us a sense of assurance and relief that despite of everything, God will always be there, always present, always faithful, always greater than the sum of all our fears.

A Month of Visitors at Sa Kabukiran

April seems to be a busy month for Sa Kabukiran. For the first few days of this month alone, we already had three groups of visitors. These were: Zonta International, SSA Alumnae Council, and the RCBC Pampanga Sales Group. All three women group found themselves at Sa Kabukiran as host to their team building or recollection seminars

Zonta Club of Pampanga

The Zonta Club of Pampanga is a non-government organization advocating for women, especially those who are victims of violence. Here on the photo from left to right are: Eileen, Atty Kay, Chuckie, Stephanie, Noy, Beth and Tita Digna. They had their team building seminar at Sa Kabukiran so that they can know each other better.

St. Scholastica's Academy Alumnae Council

They were past students of St. Scholastica's Academy, Pampanga who were elected to be officers of the Alumnae Association. Six beautiful and strong -willed women came to Sa Kabukiran to do their team building session. Here, in a very relaxed mood, right after the seminar with Mt. Arayat as their back drop. From left are: Dhudu, Elvie, Jo, Myrha, Jenny and Tita Titing.

RCBC Pampanga Sales Team

They came as strong women with so much drive. They were RCBC's Sales team in Pampanga. But they came not only for the team building but also for a recollection. Here, taking a break from the stress and fatigue of work. From Back row, left to right are: Bing, Mye, Shiela, Thea, Jinggai, Lizette. Font row left to right, Bevs, Kae, Virgie and Yna. Before they left Sa Kabukiran, these beautiful ladies did some tree hugging to let the trees absorb all their stress  (see Sa Kabukiran facebook).

Why do these people take time and pause at Sa Kabukiran?
Sa Kabukiran is the perfect place to de-stress, have some quiet time, and be one with nature and the environment. That alone, is a big reason for people to flock to this serene and beautiful place so that they can be in touch with themselves and with one another.
Thank you all of you for visiting us at Sa Kabukiran!

Salesians Return to Sa Kabukiran

Salesians return to Sa Kabukiran

They said they will return. And return, they did. On December 23, 2016 Salesians returned to Sa Kabukiran. This time, with not only seven of them but 18 of them! These were the Salesians of Don Bosco Mabalacat, Don Bosco Tarlac and Don Bosco San Jose, Nueva Ecija. These three Salesian Houses call themselves the Solid North since they are the Salesian institutions located North of Manila. The group came  early in the morning at about 7:45 am, straight from their celebration of Simbang Gabi from their respective locales. Immediately, a sumptuous breakfast of longganisang Guagua, Tocino, Tuyo, Itlog na maalat and tsokolateng batirol welcomed them.

After breakfast, the group headed to the Lolita Lapid Hall where they recited Lauds, or morning prayer. Thereafter, I gave them a talk that served like an Advent recollection for them. The talk was entitled: “ O come let us adore him.” As in other talks that I have given to some of the clergy, I told them that when I address priests and brothers, I feel a bit uneasy, knowing that I am just a lay person. Nonetheless, despite the initial unease, I took strength from the fact that what I preached were not my own words, but were words taken from the word of God.

Praying Lauds or morning prayers

After the talk, they had some moments of reflection, some of them moving around quietly the spacious and serene place of Sa Kabukiran. Then an adoration of the Blessed Eucharist was held also at the Hall. They brought along with them a kind of a small wooden tabernacle where they kept the Holy eucharist. For an hour or so, they kept watch and contemplated in silence the presence of Jesus among them. It was a scene that was simple, serene, yet touching where you see these Salesians quietly contemplating and just being there present with Jesus among themselves. I guess the ambience was also unique since the whole adoration atmosphere was surrounded by the lush trees that surrounded the hall. Really, Jesus is the Lord of all creation, and he is simply surrounded by it this time.

During the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Salesians in silence during the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
The usual sumptuous Sa Kabukiran lunch was served – lechon, adobo, bangus, hipon with tabang talangka, chicharon with buro and binagoongan rice to go with it! At table, the usual happy Salesian fellowship was present as they recalled and shared funny and hilarious episodes in their respective apostolates.
Fellowship during sumptuous lunch

I have long been out of touch with the Salesians. Of the 18 who came, only four of them were acquaintances: Fr. Joey Paras, Bro. Nick, Fr. Ben Cavestany, Fr. Rolo Alcasid. I realized that my contemporaries then have all turned older like myself and a much younger group of Salesians whom I do not know much is now taking over the work of Don Bosco. This gives a kind of assurance that Don Bosco’s work with us will continue with these energetic and younger Salesians.

My apprehensions during my talk also quickly vanished as I felt how receptive they were despite my lay status. I just felt that the Lord touched them in a very personal way, as only he can plumb the depths of the hearts and  souls of these good Salesians.
After lunch, the group headed home, fully revitalized with their encounter with their brothers in the different Salesian houses, but also with their unique and loving encounter with the Lord whom they have so lovingly followed all these years of their life. I know that Sa Kabukiran has been blessed with the presence of these Salesians but most of all with the presence of the Lord who has stayed in this lovely place even for only just a while. Merry Christmas to everyone!

Culminating Seminar of Four Gospels Sa Kabukiran

Culminating Seminar At Sa Kabukiran

Sometime in September 2016, the Archdiocesan Lay Formation Institute or ALFI launched a 12 week session on the study of the four gospels. This was to be held every Saturday from 8 am – 10 am.  The title of the seminar was “Who do you say I am?” The title is taken from that episode in the Gospel where Jesus asks the same  question to his disciples. The seminar was intended to study the four gospels so that participants could have a better knowledge of Jesus according to these Gospels. All the sessions were conducted at the DSF Building in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Some of the sharing session during the seminar

However, on the final session, on December 3, 2016, the seminar was held at Sa Kabukiran. This culminating session was to bring to a close the 12 week seminar. The day started at 10:00 am with the first session. Lunch was a potluck lunch with all participants sharing what they have brought to the lunch table. After lunch another session was held. This ended at 3 pm.
The 12 week seminar was indeed a wonderful experience to all who participated as it brought them to a closer knowledge and deeper understanding of Jesus. Such seminars bear fruit inasmuch as they bring to us a deeper faith in him who allows us to know him much more as we read his story as told to us by the evangelists.

First Salesians to set foot Sa Kabukiran

Salesians Sa Kabukiran

It was November 7, 2016. Salesians spent a day Sa Kabukiran. It was a historic first as they were the first Salesians to step inside Sa Kabukiran. They were Salesians from Tarlac who wanted to have some time for themselves, to think and reflect and evaluate the past semester. Sa Kabukiran was the perfect place for that. The trip to Sa Kabukiran was organized and sponsored by Mike Carlos who has been a very good friend and promoter of Sa Kabukiran. He invited Fr. Joey Paras SDB to come to Kabukiran and spend a day there with his confreres.
Their stay at Sa Kabukiran included a talk from me regarding the Laity in the New Evangelization. This also included a time for them in the afternoon to assess and evaluate their institution for the past semester.

At the end of the day, the salesians had a quick tour of the farm, culminating in picture taking with Mt. Arayat at the backdrop. This visit was indeed a blessing Sa Kabukiran. I think they liked the place. So they’re planning to have a day once more here with two other Salesian institutions in the north, namely, Don Bosco Mabalacat and Don Bosco San Jose, Nueva Ecija.

Two of the Salesians were my contemporary, who were a little older than I was – Fr. Joey and Bro. Nick. The rest were young Salesians who happened to know my songs way back when they were still in high school and continue to sing my songs in Don Bosco. Really happy to hear that from them. I will be awaiting their return in Kabukiran before Christmas sometime in December when the Salesian Solid North will come once more to bless this beautiful place.

St. Scho Batch 83 Reunion Sa Kabukiran

Batch 83 Reunion Day Sa Kabukiran

Sometime in May 2016, a group of St. Scho Alumnae Batch 83 had their reunion at Sa Kabukiran. They started their day taking breakfast at Eileen Aquino's residence at Marquee Place in Angeles City. From there, they traveled by convoy to Magalang at Sa Kabukiran.
It was one of those rare moments when classmates got together not only to reminisce the old days but also to tell their own stories at the moment. Life indeed has made them grow. Both happy and challenging moments is what makes life really worth living! It was a day when, surrounded with the peaceful and quiet place Sa Kabukiran, they shared their stories with one another, reflecting for a moment how they have dealt with life as best as they can. The sharing was lovely and very enriching. These small but well bonded group experienced a deeper bonding they've never had in all their years as long time classmates. Here we share a few of their pictures taken with Mt. Arayat as a back drop.

The group has asked me to facilitate a kind of retreat for them. The facilitation was not difficult as these ladies have been in touch with one another for a number of years. I've heard that they will be celebrating their silver jubilee as Alumnae of St. Scho. They are also batch mates of my sister Gina. The group was organized by Beng Tanglao and Eileen Aquino.

Remembering Mom's Third Death Anniversary

In June 27, 2016, we remembered Mommy's third death anniversary here at Sa Kabukiran. This whole place is practically dedicated to her memory. The name Sa Kabukiran comes from her favorite song, Sa Kabukiran sang by Sylvia La Torre. A special Kubo was made in memory of her. It was here where we celebrated her memory and life by praying together as a family and with our close relatives.
Lighting Candles in her memory
Praying together for her
Ating Beth saying a prayer for the sweetest Mother she has ever known.
Cindy whispering to Jesus:" Tell my mommy that I love her very much!"
Myself, asking Mommy to be with me at all times.
The family together witnessing to her lovely legacy of love and care.

MQC recollection at Sa Kabukiran

MQC students hold their annual recollection at Sa Kabukiran. For five consecutive Saturdays and Sundays, students attended an overnight recollection by batches.
Here are pictures of some of these students. The recollection was facilitated by Manny Masaclao, a theology teacher at MQC. The recollections were held at the Lolita B. Lapid Hall of Sa Kabukiran.

Three Ladies visit the garden of Eden

Sa Kabukiran had three visitors lately. They were organized by Jen Basilio Dayag.  I wasn't there to meet them. But judging from the pictures they sent me through a common friend, Aries, I could imagine that they've enjoyed every bit of time Sa Kabukiran. I really loved their pictures. They were beautiful pictures. It really highlighted the natural beauty of the place. I'm sharing these now so you too can enjoy the peaceful and serene beauty of Sa Kabukiran.

BGC Officers and Staff Spend a Day Sa Kabukiran

Jan. 6, 2016,  Saturday.  BGC officers and staff spent a day Sa Kabukiran for a training seminar on teambuilding that focuses on self-confidence and unity building. This seminar was a brainchild of Mike Carlos and Remmel Sotto, who are both officers of BGC.  Both saw the need for enhancement seminars like these to improve the BGC organization.

During the first session,  where participants introduce themselves using symbols to represent themselves.

Visits to Kabukiran always highlight this sumptuous kapampangan meal of adobo, bangus and shrimp together with delicious dips like buro, achara and tabang talangka. Nag – lelearn ka na, busog ka pa!

Delta Bikers Find an Environmental Oasis of Peace and Quiet Sa Kabukiran

Dec. 23, 2015. A group of bikers who call themselves Team Delta, visited Sa Kabukiran. The group started out in San Fernando, Pampanga at about 5:00 a.m. and headed biking towards the town of Arayat. Thereafter, they headed to the town of Magalang at Barangay Turu, where Sa Kabukiran is located.
Sa Kabukiran was a well deserved respite for these 25 bikers, who after a grueling bike through several towns found some peace, quiet and relaxation at a lovely environmental oasis in Kabukiran. The team was headed by Mike Carlos together with Remmel Sotto. They arrived at around 9:30 a.m., and immediately had a sumptuous brunch served on fresh banana leaves. After lunch, the group lounged for some time at the gazebo spending some time together. The day ended some time about 1:30p.m. after the group had a a short tour around Kabukiran.

Brunch time! After losing all those calories biking, now its time to gain them back again. (Haha…)

Lounging at the gazebo after brunch. Nothing better than a cup of great tsokolateng batirol, nowhere to be found but only at Sa Kabukiran.

The trip to Kabukiran always ends with this majestic view of Mt. Arayat at the backdrop. Farewell Kabukiran. Til the next biking trip!

GRBank goes to Sa Kabukiran

On November 4, Wednesday, Sa Kabukiran was visited by the Board of Directors of Guagua Rural Bank (GRBank). The board, headed by its President, Jay Carlos were accompanied by some of its bank personnel. They came not only to visit Sa Kabukiran but also took the opportunity to hold their weekly credit meeting there.

The board decided to hold their weekly meeting there after hearing a number of positive feedback regarding the place. Since my sister Bettina was a member of the board, they asked her to arrange the visit. When the board arrived, you could see in their faces the surprise and the wonder they had for the place. But I guess, they were surprised all the more with the lunch that was served. In typical Sa Kabukiran fashion, the board was treated to a sumptuous Kapampangan meal placed on fresh banana leaves, with everyone eating with their bare hands. I heard a lot of compliments about the food. It was simple, nothing really fancy, but was really filling. I heard Jay telling us that the place and the food was a completely new and different experience. Similar comments were given by other members of the board like Grace whom I particularly saw to be so appreciative and so amazed at the entire set up. Mike, too, one of the board members , had long wanted to come and see this place. Finally, on that day, he saw for himself and experienced the Kabukiran way. Thanks Jay. Thanks Grace. Thanks Mike. Thanks too Liza, for your generous comments on the farm. Thanks to all of the board directors of GRBank for gracing our place with your presence. Your comments give us a lot of encouragement to continue our work in this simple place we call Sa Kabukiran. I hope, you help us let other people know this place by retelling your wonderful experiences Sa Kabukiran.

After that sumptuous meal, the board proceded to the Kubo dedicated to mom’s memory. Before they held

the credit meeting, I was requested by Jay to give a short talk. The talk I prepared for the group was about the role of business in the ecosystem. I thought that since the group was a business group, a seminar on the role of business in the ecosystem was very appropriate. Sa Kabukiran prides itself of advocating for environmental issues and delivering these to a group of business people was just the right place and time.

Right after the short talk about business and the environment, the group held their credit meeting. The day ended at about 5:30p.m., with some of the board members particularly Jay, Grace and Mike taking a view of Mt. Arayat from the edge of the farm. I am sure their stay with Kabukiran was a wonderful time spent. Having people who appreciate much of the work done gives encouragement and such affirmation for this endeavor. Thanks GRBank. More power to the number one Rural Bank in Pampanga and Central Luzon!

Beauties Sa Kabukiran

April 11, Saturday. It was the day when 6 beautiful women spent a whole day Sa Kabukiran to strengthen the bonds of their friendship through a seminar on friendship entitled: Discovering Friendship with the Beloved Disciple. It was Marie Gozun who first proposed the idea to her group of friends to hold a kind of seminar/retreat Sa Kabukiran especially right after the Holy Week. She proposed the encounter to have a theme about friendship as their group was a tightly knit group of friends who just wanted to experience some growth in their life as friends.

This is the second seminar here at Sa Kabukiran initiated by the Gozuns. The first seminar was held in March with Willy and Marie Gozun’s family. I thank Willy, personally, for having initiated these seminars first for his family and now with his wife’s group of friends. As facilitator of the seminar, I found both seminars a learning experience, as it was my first time to handle a seminar intended for a family and then a group of friends. But I also thank the participants who also enriched me greatly with their wealth of sharing. At the end, everything became such a pleasant and enriching experience.

Willy’s family seminar revolved around the idea of relationships within the family. Each member had their own time to write about what they felt within the family. (I must admit though, that the activities were a bit risky. It takes an open and loving family to be able to open up to one another and engage in this kind of activity) At the end, the seminar took a look at St. Paul’s definition of love in 1 Cor. 13 which ultimately should be the basis of what love is all about. As love defines the relationship we have in the family, it was important to understand the concept of love in its Christian context especially when we relate to one another in the family. The seminar with Willy’s family seemed to have energized the whole family so much so that weeks later, Willy himself came up and suggested to his wife’s group of friends to attend a seminar about friendship.

The seminar on friendship was also unique. To start with, the participants of this seminar had to be friends already. The seminar tried to explore the dynamics of relationships within the context of friendship, using the fourth Gospel, the gospel of John as a kind of framework. Jesus also had friends. The early days of Jesus’ public life focused on how his new friends wanted to know and follow him.  Jesus wanted his friends ( also called apostles) to know him deeper and understand who he really is. At the end, redemption according to the gospel of john is even defined within the understanding and context of friendship:  “ No greater love can a man have for his friends, than to lay down his life for them…”

Seminars like these are a breath of fresh air for people who go through the process. For me who facilitate such seminars, it is one great learning experience. Come to think of it, such seminars like these ones that are meant to strengthen bonds of community and friendships are at the heart of Sa Kabukiran’s vision. I just hope that many more people will one day experience seminars like these so that Sa Kabukiran will be known as a haven where people can truly experience deep friendships and genuine community building.

Visitors from the South

Last month in August, I had visitors from the South ( Tagaytay and Manila). For a time, I have been teaching at the Divine Word School of Theology (DWST) in Tagaytay City.  Some friends over there came to see Sa Kabukiran in August 24-25 for an overnight stay. They were Dra. Maritz, Bing, Grace and Gina. They were joined by Resty, also a colleague studying at DWST. The trip Sa Kabukiran was designed so that there would be both instruction and leisure. Since all these friends were students of the Bible at a certain point, we had some great inputs from Resty regarding the Jewish reading of scriptures. This was a timely input since Resty just arrived from a month long study in Israel.

We had a sumptuous lunch. I call these meals, Laklak meals. Laklak in tagalog means unmoderated greed especially in eating. Soon, I shall be offering up these laklak meals to tourists and travellers who may want to visit Sa Kabukiran as part of their food tripping. I guarantee you, it shall be a voracious experience!

My visitors really were dressed to become tourist in an unfamiliar terrain. The morning after, I toured them around the farm, around my Mom’s memorial kubo and took some pictures  of them with majestic Mt. Arayat at the background.

I’m sure that after spending a night Sa Kabukiran, my visitors from the south would have been filled with a great eating experience and with a calming and soothing experience with nature at the fields Sa Kabukiran. I hope that anyone wanting to have the same experiences as my visitors from the south would soon come flocking to this wonderful oasis we so loving call Sa Kabukiran.

With me is Lola Bing, the leader of the pack. Here in front of the signage Sa Kabukiran
